Azerbaijani Ex-President to Publicize his Position on Elections this Week

Azerbaijan, Baku, 29 July / corr. Trend E.Babayev / Ayaz Mutallibov, ex-President of Azerbaijan and co-chairman of the left Azerbaijani Social Democratic Party (ASDP), will publicize his decision on participation in the presidential elections this week. "The ASDP's position on the elections will become clear on 2 August," Araz Alizade, the other co-chairman of the ASDP, told Trend on 29 July.

The presidential elections will be held in Azerbaijan on 15 October.

Alizade did not speak about a decision of the party. "We are against boycotting the elections. We want to participate in the elections with own candidate," Alizade said, refusing name their candidate.

The SDPA is the left opposition party. Araz Azimzade and Ayaz Mutallibov, ex-president of Azerbaijan, who currently lives in emigration, are the co-chairmen of the party

Mutallibov was elected the first president of the country after the announcement of independency in 1991. When the Popular Front Party came into power in 1992, he left the country and now lives in Russia.

Mutallibov is on the international search on the basis of accusation of the Azerbaijani Prosecutor General. Mutallibov is charged with the attempt to coup d'etat, organization of illegal armed groups, forcible capture of authority and other heinous crimes.
