"This is a matter of life and death. If former US assistant secretary of state Richard) Holbrooke wants to have me dead, and if his arm is so very long, then I want to know if his arm can also reach me here," Karadzic said.
Judge Orie recommended Karadzic to address the issue of safety and security of a defendant in a detention unit directly with the court registrar who would discuss it with the president of the ICTY, who is, Orie said, the one responsible for that.
At several points it became clear Karadzic was not familiar with the court regulations and procedures, even though Judge Orie took a lot of time on several occasions to explain and re-explain to him the procedures and regulations.
Karadzic requested time to speak about irregularities in his transfer to The Hague, but he was repeatedly cut off by Judge Orie, and once by the prosecution who complained to the court.
"I have no complaint against the officials," Karadzic said with an audible laugh when asked about his living conditions. "I have been on worse places."
