Georgian citizens will use new IDs in 2009.

The country's civil registration agency has already launched activities to introduce biometric IDs this year.

The IDs will be voluntary.

Biometric IDs will differ from ordinary identification cards. They will include microchips with personnel and electron data, digital photos and fingerprints. Iris data may also be added.

The new ID will cost more than the traditional identification card.

Four million lari have been allocated to the project. The EU allocaated part of the funds.

The EU will purchase special equipment to be installed on Georgian borders.

A total of 26 countries use biometric IDs and 20 more countries will begin by 2010.

Georgian citizens can receive the new ID in September.
