The number of the municipalities in Azerbaijan whose office terms have not yet finished and which want to join the municipal elections has increased.
"The Central Electoral Commission (CEC) has received 40 applications from municipalities, whose terms are not yet over," the CEC said.
Repeated and additional municipal elections held in 2006 covered 81 municipalities. Their term of office will end in 2011.
Azerbaijan will hold municipal elections in mid-December 2009. A total of 22 municipalities whose office terms have not yet finished applied to the CEC last week.
The Electoral Code does not provide concrete rules for election participation for municipalities whose office terms are not completed, Head of the CEC Legal Department, Irada Hajiyev, told Trend . "There are no legal obstacles to hinder these municipalities from participating in the elections," she said.
