Adriana Dinu, the Practice Leader on Environment and Energy at UNDP Regional Center in Bratislava said that "the project will seek to strengthen the capacity for adaptation to climate change in agriculture and water management".
According to experts, climate change, including natural disasters associated with climate change, pose significant risks to the important sectors of Turkmenistan's economy, human welfare and environment.
One of the main goals of the UNDP project "Climate Risk Management in Turkmenistan" is to expand opportunities for rural population to adapt to climate change. In this regard, the project will contribute to enhancing the efficiency of water use in agriculture and disaster risk reduction.
The project will also lay the basis for inter-ministerial cooperation that will enable key partners - the Committee for Hydrometeorology, the Ministry of Agriculture, the Ministry of Water Resources, the Ministry of Nature Protection and the Department for Emergency Situations of the Ministry of Defence to take into consideration climate change issues in their policy documents to let them take into account possible trends in this area already at the planning stage of economic projects.
