The U.S. administration's critical report on the situation with democracy in Georgia is a serious warning to Mikhail Saakashvili's administration. If he does not take into account this warning, he will face a revolution, ex-Georgian President Eduard Shevardnadze told the weekly "Asaval-Dasavali" today.

"I was convinced that the U.S. will sooner or later put an incisive report on the state of democracy in Georgia, as it is a reality," he said. The U.S. State Department's serious remarks on human rights, humane attitude toward prisoners, the situation with refugees and freedom of information dissemination are the fundamentals of democracy. Washington has serious remarks on all these points."

Shevardnadze thinks that these remarks were made late.

"I do not think that, despite Saakashvili's statement that he accepts these comments, the president will assuage anything," he said.

The ex-president thinks that if the authorities do not improve the situation, Georgian-U.S relations will enter a phase of tension. "Georgia will lose confidence in the world community," he said. Georgian people will wake up and this will lead to a revolution."
