IAEA experts satisfied with work of Azerbaijani Ministry of Emergency Situations

Azerbaijani Minister of Emergency Situations Colonel-General Kamaladdin Heydarov received a delegation of International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA)experts led by Horst Monken Fernandes, the ministry website said on Friday.

The minister said that the Azerbaijani Ministry of Emergency Situations is cooperating with a number of influential international organizations, including the International Atomic Energy Agency, and spoke about the activities of the Ministry of Emergency Situations addressing the environmental problems of Absheron Peninsula.

The minister spoke about the importance of the project to clean the industrial sites of Baku iodine plants in the Sabunchu and Surakhani districts. The sites are contaminated with coal containing natural radionuclides, oil and oil products and other waste. He said that the project was under the supervision of agency experts and safety regulations were met.

Work on electrification was carried out at both rehabilitated production sites. A water supply system was constructed on the territory and a sewage system was built in the surrounding residential areas. Creation of ecological parks is planned in the rehabilitated areas.

Horst Monken Fernandes expressed his satisfaction with the rapid implementation of the project, and said that no radioactive substances were found during the first assessment. He said that the cleaning was conducted in accordance with international experience and people living in the neighborhood were at no risk. After cleaning, these areas were re-examined and positively assessed. It could be said that there is no contamination in the production areas in Ramana and Surakhani.

Fernandes stressed that the project carried out under the guidance of the Ministry of Emergency Situations, was conducted by a national company and through internal resources of the country.
