BAKU, Azerbaijan, August 20. Strengthening historical, political, and economic connections has always been a unique aspect of Azerbaijani-Russian relations. These relations are founded on the principles of territorial integrity, equality, independence of states, and non-interference in internal affairs.

Vladimir Putin's visit to Azerbaijan and Russian-Azerbaijani relations.

Azerbaijan, which regained its independence after the collapse of the USSR, like many post-Soviet countries, strived to get rid of Russia's influence. However, over time, it became clear that, along with Azerbaijan's independent foreign policy and economic development, relations with Russia were also important. Vladimir Putin's visit to Azerbaijan and his close cooperation with President Ilham Aliyev have further strengthened relations between the two countries. This is the first time since the collapse of the USSR that a Russian leader has established such close relations with Azerbaijan. During Putin's presidency, as a result of the efforts of National Leader Heydar Aliyev and Vladimir Putin, Russian-Azerbaijani relations began to normalize, and in the subsequent period, due to the farsighted policy of President Ilham Aliyev, these relations were further developed.

Russia is one of the world's leading countries, a permanent member of the UN Security Council, and an important partner for Azerbaijan in the region. The proper development of relations between Azerbaijan and Russia led to the fact that it did not side with Armenia in the 44-day war in 2020 and anti-terrorist measures in 2023.

Development of economic ties

Today, economic ties between Azerbaijan and Russia are also at a high level. The trade turnover between the two countries increased by 17 percent to $4.5 billion in 2023. It is expected that this figure will increase even more in 2024. Of particular importance here are sectors such as industry, agriculture, tourism, and transit flows. The existing potential of both countries underpins this growth in economic and trade relations, which is unaffected by international sanctions.

Cooperation on the North-South transportation corridor is another important area between the two countries. The development of this corridor further strengthens Azerbaijan's position as a global transit hub, as well as expanding economic cooperation between the two countries.

Azerbaijan's independent policy

Azerbaijan's independent foreign policy aims to cooperate with all parties within the framework of national interests. Azerbaijan maintains good relations with the West, Russia, Iran, and other countries. Azerbaijan, as one of the active members of the Non-Aligned Movement, does not join military-political blocs, demonstrating its balanced policy.

Azerbaijan's positive relations with Russia and Ukraine are also noteworthy. The European Union is seeking to strengthen cooperation with Azerbaijan to fill the gap left in this sphere following the refusal to purchase Russian gas through Ukraine. Azerbaijan's favorable ties with both Russia and Ukraine enhance its potential as a peace mediator and ensure its recognition in the world as a dialogue space.

Azerbaijani-Russian relations are developing at a high level due to President Ilham Aliyev's farsighted and purposeful policy. These relations serve to strengthen peace, security, and cooperation in the region, protect national interests, and continue Azerbaijan's independent policy. The friendly ties established between Azerbaijan and Russia form the backbone of mutually beneficial cooperation at regional and international levels.
