Azerbaijan, Baku / Trend corr. S.Ilhamgizi / Mazahir Panahov, the Chairman of the Central Election Committee (CEC), stated during the meeting with the Council of Europe's 'Ago' Monitoring group on 6 July that negotiations held by the Azerbaijani Government to improve the country's election system and to inject changes to the Election Code would continue at the beginning of September.

The delegation of the Council of Europe's 'Ago' Monitoring group on Azerbaijan and Armenia, on a visit to Baku, showed interest in the election system reforms, as well as preparations in Azerbaijan for the forthcoming President elections in 2008.

The delegation asked a range of questions in order to eliminate any possible shortcomings that were observed in the Parliamentary elections in 2005.

Panahov said that as a result of shortages in the registration process, the results of the election in several constituencies were canceled, some members were punished and others were made answerable for their actions.

Panah noted that courses would be held to enlighten the members of constituencies of the election commission. Currently, necessary measures have been taken to improve work conditions of the election commission and to provide them with necessary equipment.

Ago' members demonstrated an interest in discussions concerning changes in the election code of the country. Consensus has already been achieved on many issues. Discussions to change the election commission composition are to be continued.
