Security controls around Tiananmen Square have increased in the run-up to the Opening Ceremony of the Beijing Olympic Games on August 8, reported dpa.
Visitors now have to pass through security cordons similar to those at airports, where checks are made for explosives, weapons and other instrument that state-run media said could "endanger public security."
According to the China Daily newspaper, plans are also in place to limit the number of visitors to Tiananmen Square, the scene of a 1989 massacre, in which hundreds and possibly thousands of student pro- democracy protesters were killed.
Security has also been stepped up on Beijing's public transportation system with bag controls at train stations and 6,000 security personnel on duty on the 18,000 buses that carry around 18 million people daily.
