The Azerbaijani government is not against the adoption of a defamation bill.
"However, it is important to create the necessary conditions so the adopted law does not lead to problems for journalists," head of sector of social and political issues department of the Azerbaijani Presidential Administration, Vugar Aliyev, said during a conference on "Defamation and Freedom of Expression in Azerbaijan." "This law will be enacted when favorable conditions are created."
According to the official, the government has taken the necessary measures to strengthen media freedom in the country.
"However, not all problems have been solved. It is necessary to take further practical steps," Aliyev said. "First, the media must achieve economic independence. Second, it is necessary to improve the professional level of journalists. Third, the political polarization of the press should be kept to a minimum. The most important question associated with the successful completion of the fight against 'racketeering,' which adversely affects the image of journalism."
