Azerbaijan, Baku / Тrend corr K. Zarbaliyeva / An international conference on 'Impact of the European Convention on Human Rights on Development of Legal System in Azerbaijan' was held in Baku on 9 July. The event was attended by judges, public prosecutors, attorneys, candidates for attorney position and representatives of the Justice Ministry and Juridical Council of Azerbaijan.
The Azerbaijani Justice Minister, Fikrat Mammadov, noted the importance of the European Convention in the introduction of international standards to the national legislation and legal system. Informing the participants of the reforms carried out during the recent years in the juridical system, the Minister stated that compared to the year 2000, the salaries of judges had increased by 25 times and a hierarchical structure court system had been established.
The director of the project of German Technical Cooperation Society, Thomas German, highly appreciated the reforms carried out in Azerbaijan within that field.
During the conference the judges of the European Court, Boshtian Zkhupanchich, Khanlar Hajiyev, an MP of the Milli Majlis (Azerbaijani Parliament), Ali Huseynov, the department head of the Justice Ministry, Azer Jafarov, and others discussed decisions by the European Court, the role of judges to protect democratic values, the implementation of the European Convention on Human Rights in Azerbaijani legislation, application of the standards of European law and so on.
