Turkmenistan reveals serious irregularities in procurement of equipment from abroad

The Turkmen Supreme Control Chamber revealed serious violations by foreign companies in the supply of various equipment and machinery from abroad during the inspections. The most recent governmental meeting discussed the issue.

"The operational characteristics of equipment supplied by the companies do not meet those requirements set forth in the contract" the Turkmen government reported, noting "serious violations".

After hearing the report, President Gurbangulu Berdimuhammedov "demanded to ensure proper control over strict adherence of all obligations under the contract by the foreign firms and companies".

Previously, the Turkmen General Prosecutor' Office conducted the inspection raid on construction sites and installations erected by foreign companies. The report was heard at the governmental meeting chaired by Berdimuhammedov.

Most of the construction in Turkmenistan carried out by the Turkish companies. Over 500 companies with the participation of Turkish capital operate in the country. This figure means 35 percent of the total number of the foreign companies operating in Turkmenistan.

Turkish companies work on more than 800 projects, including the production values - especially in the textile industry, where direct Turkish investments amounts to about $ 260 million. Mutual trade between the two countries in recent years is estimated at nearly a half billion dollars.
