German premium carmaker BMW has taken over from Toyota as the world's most valuable car brand worldwide, according to a survey by market research company Millward Brown, DPA reported.

In its annual BrandZ Top 100 survey, the company put the marque worth of the BMW Group at a staggering 21.8 billion dollars, a value decline of nine per cent compared to 2009, but still sufficient to take the top slot.

BMW's earnings before interest and tax( EBIT) also swung to a 449- million-euro profit from a 55-million-euro loss last year.

The image of Japan's Toyota has suffered in recent months from a string of design flaws and mechanical gremlins, knocking it back into the No 2 perch among 26 corporate brands included in the survey.

Millward Brown says it uses a complex formula to calculate a brand's worth based on key company data, projected growth and data from a survey among 1.5 million consumers worldwide.
