The ENPI-FLEG Programme has kicked off its activities in Azerbaijan, with two meetings hosted by WWF Azerbaijan and attended by a number of stakeholders, ENPI information center reported. The purpose of both meetings was to create favourable grounds for cooperation in the course of further programme activities.
The first meeting in Ganja brought together representatives from the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources and local forestry units, scientists and NGOs. The second meeting held in Baku gathered civil society representatives and officials from the Department for Development of Forests.
The key issues discussed were improvement of forest legislation, sustainable forest management, the role of communities in forest management and alternative livelihoods and sources of energy for communities in Azerbaijan.
According to a press release, the activities drew considerable media coverage.
The €6 million ENPI Forest Law Enforcement and Governance (FLEG) programme supports governments, civil society and the private sector in the development of sound and sustainable forest management practices, including the prevention of illegal forestry activities.
