Kazakhstan can learn from the Ukrainian-Russian gas conflict, Kazakh member of parliament Vladimir Bobrov said.
"Russia, Ukraine and Europe are all studying the nuances of who carries responsibility for international gas transit to solve the gas dispute," he said. "The conflict is the best way to introduce international legislation that Kazakhstan will need in the future when we begin to export gas in larger volumes."
According to official reports, Kazakh fields have three billion cubic meters of gas. This will enable the country to meet its demand for at least 150 years.
Kazakhstan passed the gas sector development program in 2006. The program aims to make Kazakhstan a gas production and export leader in the CIS. The output from the Tengiz and Karachaganak fields and the industrial exploration of the Kashagan field will contribute to realizing this goal.
Kazakhstan's gas output will hit an annual 40-45 billion cubic meters by 2014.
Kazakhstan's southern regions face gas shortages even though the country has huge gas reserves due to the lack of an internal pipeline. Kazakhstan exports gas from Uzbekistan to its south regions as a result.
