Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Mehdi Safari discussed the Caspian Sea status while on a visit to Ashgabat.

Turkmen and Iranian officials confirmed their "mutual commitment to a decision on the basis of international laws, good neighborliness, and respect for the interests of all Caspian Sea states," the Turkmen Foreign Ministry reported.

Delegations of the two countries exchanged views on urgent issues of Turkmenistan-Iran relations and international problems of mutual interest.

Iran and Turkmenistan opened a new pipeline along the Dovletabad-Serakhs-Hangeran route in early January 2010.

According to the sides, the initiative indicates the potential of bilateral ties, which shows a steady growth each year and covers new perspective directions.

The sides emphasized the "good neighborly and friendly relations between Turkmenistan and Iran, based on the traditions of mutual understanding, respect, trust and constructivism."
