BAKU, Azerbaijan, September 13. Wien Energie GmbH, Austria's biggest player in the electricity game, has thrown in the towel on Russian gas and is gearing up to pivot to an alternative, primarily liquefied natural gas (LNG), in 2025, Trend reports via Wien Energie GmbH.

“Wien Energie GmbH also plans to use blockchain certificates of origin to guarantee the origin of gas,” the information notes.

However, European Energy Commissioner Kadri Simson stated this week during a discussion on the outcome and development plans of the EU Energy Union that Slovakia, Austria, and Italy should prepare to halt imports of Russian pipeline gas from January 2025, once hopes of extending a transit agreement with Ukraine faded.

The EU receives 14–15 bcm of Russian gas in transit through Ukraine via the Sudzha hub pipeline.

The agreement between Gazprom and the Ukrainian side expires on December 31, 2024.

Austria, which is still more than 80 percent reliant on Russian gas, is also linked by infrastructure to Germany and expects to take LNG from German terminals.
