The Chairman of the Board of Directors of Aseman Airline Company Shahab Atashzai has announced that the company saved some $15 million by domestically overhauling four old planes, Trend reports citing the official website of the public relation of Aseman Airlines.

"Following the approvals of the board of directors of the Aseman Airline Co., the return to service of the existing oil planes was put on the agenda," Atashzai said.

"The planes are ready for operation again, and this cost approximately $5 million,” he said. "If we were to buy new planes, they would've cost some $20 million."

Iran is suffering from an ageing fleet of airliners due to long years of U.S. sanctions that prohibit plane makers to sell aircraft and parts to the Islamic Republic.

A brief reprieve from the sanctions in 2016-2017 led to large contracts with Airbus to supply new planes, but the reimposition of U.S. sanctions in 2018 scuttled the deal.
