Kyrgyz president appoints new foreign minister

Kyrgyz President Kurmanbek Bakiyev signed a decree to appoint Kadyrbek Sarbaev, a former ambassador to China, as the new foreign minister, news from the Kyrgyz capital of Bishkek reaching here said Monday.

Sarbaev had previously served as director of the Department of Consular Affairs in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and deputy foreign minister. He was Kyrgyzstan's ambassador to China from July 2007 to last week.

Former head of the the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ednan Karabaev, was dismissed from the post by Bakiyev on Jan. 16., Xinhua reported.

Bakiyev also made other staff changes in the decree. Former First Deputy Prime Minister Iskenderbek Aydaraliyev was made head of the Ministry of Agriculture, Water Resources and Processing Industry.

Former Consul General in Istanbul, Turkey, Ruslan Kazakbayev, was appointed First Deputy Foreign Minister and Baktygul Kalambekova was made Deputy Foreign Minister.

Several top officials in Bakiyev's administration have been sacked recently in a reshuffle of posts.
