Tajikistan's national energy company faces rising debt to Russian co-owned Sangtuda HPP-1

DUSHANBE, Tajikistan, October 29. The debt of Barqi Tojik, Tajikistan's state energy company, to Sangtuda HPP-1 OJSC, co-owned by Russia and Tajikistan, has reached a total of 3.53 billion somoni ($331.6 million) as of September 30, Trend reports.

Since the beginning of the year, the debt has increased by 543 million somoni ($51.014 million), according to Sangtuda HPP-1.

Sangtuda HPP-1 supplied Barqi Tojik with 2,137 million kWh of electricity from January through September 2024, which is 41 million kWh more than in the same period of 2023. The plant's capacity utilization rate over the first nine months of this year was 48.8 percent.

Since the beginning of 2024, Barqi Tojik's average payment level for supplied electricity has been 32 percent of the total cost.

The plant began operations in January 2008. The ownership structure of Sangtuda HPP-1 includes a 75 percent minus one share stake held by Russian companies and a 25 percent plus one share stake held by Tajikistan. The plant has an installed capacity of 670 MW and is considered one of the largest hydroelectric stations in the country, alongside the Nurek (3,000 MW) and Baypazin HPPs (600 MW).
