Iran Materials 11 May 2010 02:46 (UTC +04:00)

The families of the three US citizens detained in western Iran last year will be allowed to visit them, Press TV has learned.

The three, Joshua Fattal, 27, Shane Bauer, 27, and Sarah Shourd, 31, were arrested in late July 2009 in the western Iranian city of Marivan for illegal entry into the country.

The three US citizens were traveling on Syrian and Iraqi visas and crossed the border illegally, Iranian officials say.

The families of the detainees maintain that the three had accidentally crossed the border into Iran while hiking in a scenic area of northern Iraq.

In an interview with Press TV in April, Iranian Intelligence Minister Heydar Moslehi said that the three US citizens had links with Western and Israeli intelligence agencies.

However, he added that the Iranian Judiciary should decide when to launch an investigation into the case.

On October 29, the Swiss ambassador to Tehran, Livia Leu Agosti, visited the three in Tehran's Evin prison for the second time. After the 40-minute meeting, she said they were in good physical condition.

Switzerland
represents US interests in Iran since Tehran and Washington severed diplomatic ties following the 1979 Islamic Revolution.

It not clear when the families of the three US citizens will be visiting Iran and no date for the visit has been announced.
