Iran is establishing a 400-kilovolt power electricity transmission line in a bid to boost the electricity exchange capacity with the neighboring Armenia, Mirfattah Qarebagh, the managing director of Electricity Network Management Company of Iran told the Mehr news agency.
Construction of the transmission line was launched on November 15, 2010. The project is being carried out by Iranian company Sanir. The construction is estimated to cost between €100-105 million.
Previously, the deputy energy minister Mohammad Behzad, had said that the project is aimed to connect Iran's power grid to Georgia via Armenia.
Armenian Energy and Natural Resources Minister Armen Movsisyan has said that electricity swap between Armenia and Iran will increase from the present 350 megawatts (MW) to 1,200 MW.
Iran plans to connect its national power electricity grid to Russia by the next calendar year which will end on March 20, 2013, Iran power generation transmission and distribution management company (TAVANIR) managing director stated.
Iran will exchange up to 15 billion kilowatt hours (BkWh) of electricity with its neighboring countries by the end of the current year, up 50 percent year on year, Homayoun Haeri added, the Mehr news agency reported
The country is currently exchanging electricity with Afghanistan, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Iraq, Pakistan, Nakhichevan, Turkey and Turkmenistan and plans to add 5,000 megawatts of capacity to its power grid annually, the report further said.
