The Guardian Council has approved the qualifications of four-fifth of the candidates who had registered to run for the next parliamentary election, the council's spokesman Abbas Ali Kadkhodaii announced on Tuesday.

The election is scheduled to be held on March 2. The MPs will be elected for a term of four years.

More than 5,200 candidates had registered to compete for 290 seats.

Speaking to IRNA, Kadkhodaii also said that the council will start investigating the complaints lodged by the candidates whose qualifications have been rejected.

There is a possibility that their qualifications will be approved, he added.
