BAKU, Azerbaijan, October 20. Iran is undertaking significant efforts to upgrade its international railway corridors, with plans to construct 1,800 kilometers of new railway lines, Deputy Executive Director of Iran's Company for the Construction and Development of Transport Infrastructure Abbas Khatibi told reporters, Trend reports.

He indicated that a total of 3,200 kilometers of railway lines are expected to be developed between March 20, 2024, and March 19, 2029.

Khatibi detailed that of this planned length, 1,000 kilometers will involve upgrading existing lines to dual-track and electrified systems, while 400 kilometers will connect to industrial and commercial facilities. The remaining 1,800 kilometers will consist of newly constructed railway lines.

The planned railways include critical routes such as Chabahar-Zahedan, Kermanshah-Khosravi, Rasht-Astara, Dorud-Andimeshk, Shiraz-Bushehr, and Zahedan-Yunesi.

“The development of these railway lines will enhance the country's international transit capabilities, ensuring that Iran’s railway infrastructure adequately supports freight transportation," he added.

To note, several key corridors pass through Iran, including the East-West and North-South transit routes.
