BAKU, Azerbaijan, February 3. The reserves of Sungun Copper Mine in East Azerbaijan Province, located in the northwest of Iran, have increased five times, the chairman of the Organization of Industries, Mines, and Trade of Iran's East Azerbaijan Province Sabir Parnian told local media, Trend reports.
According to him, due to new discoveries of the Sungun Copper Mine and approval of Iran's Ministry of Industry, Mines, and Trade, copper reserves at the mine have increased by 1.15 billion tons.
Paryan added that the reserves of the Sungun Copper Mine have thus increased to 1.4 billion tons.
“This success is the result of accurate discoveries and effective investment in the mining sector. Thus, it will increase the country's copper production potential and create new investment and employment opportunities,” he noted.
The Sungun Copper complex is located at the Sungun Copper Mine in Iran. The mine is considered one of the largest mines in Iran and the Middle East.
Meanwhile, copper concentrate production at the Sungun Copper Complex of East Azerbaijan Province, located in northwestern Iran, increased by 6 percent during nine months of the current Iranian year (from March 20 through December 20, 2024) compared to the same period last year (from March 21 through December 21, 2023).
To note, Iran's national copper industry company claims that the country has 19 billion tons of copper reserves. Sarcheshmeh and Sungun are considered Iran's main copper mines.
