The foreign trade turnover with 149 world countries amounted to $24.556 billion in Jan.-Sept. 2012, or 7.67 percent less than Jan.-Sept. last year. The volume of exports decreased by 9.9 percent to $17.791 billion compared to the same period of 2011. The volume of import increased by 1.24 percent and hit $6.765 billion. Azerbaijan exported 1,992 products, and imported 6,024 different goods. The index of export exceeded import as of Jan.-Sept. 2012. This formed the foreign trade surplus to the amount of $11.026 billion.
As in previous periods, oil and oil products are mainly exported from Azerbaijan.
However, the decline in oil production volumes in the country has reduced exports, and consequently has also reduced the foreign trade turnover of the country.

Most of Azerbaijan's exports (85.75 percent) fell to the export of crude oil in Jan.-Sept. 2012.
The exports of crude oil decreased by 10.92 percent compared to the same period of last year.
Azerbaijan also reduced gas export by 4.4 percent in September compared to August.
As of January-September 2012, its share in total exports amounted to 2.38 percent compared to 2.61 percent in 2011.
According to the State Customs Committee, gas export from the country in January-September amounted to 4.892 billion m3 according to the gas meters, including 5.99 billion m3 in September. Around 1.838 billion m3 of gas worth $4.24 billion, including 1.4 billion m3 worth $4.13 billion were registered in accordance with cargo customs declarations in September. Export price for 2012 is $230.69 per 1,000 m3, including $295.69 in September.
In January-September, Azerbaijan exported chemical products worth $119.703 million. Exports of chemical products increased by 54.72 percent compared to the same period of last year. The share of chemical products amounted to 0.67 percent in total exports in January-September. It should be noted that "Azerkimya" production association increased exports of the main kinds of products: polyethylene, propylene, isopropyl alcohol, polyethylene, propylene glycol, and others to Turkey. Thus, over 50 percent of all exports of "Azerkimya" is exported to the Turkish market.
The success of the country in exports of aluminum and its products should be stressed. As of Jan.-Sept., Azerbaijan increased aluminum export by 18.76 times.
In total, during the period, aluminum worth $72.568 million were sold abroad. The share of exports of aluminum and aluminum goods, of the total export volume of the country was 0.41 percent as of Oct. 1.
Azerbaijan has two aluminum plants - in Sumgait and Ganja, as well as its own raw material base (alunite). A new aluminum plant opened in Ganja produces 50,000 tons of high quality aluminum per year. It is capable of producing 100,000-200,000 tons. In this regard, the Azerbaijani government announced the plans to cease the import of finished products from aluminum.
Azerbaijan is a net exporter of electricity for the fourth year. It did not export electric power in September resumed in July. According to the State Customs Committee, in January-September 2012, electricity supply for export from the country amounted to 3.082 million kilowatt / hours in accordance with the meters.
As a result, in 2012, the country exported electricity at a price of $0.0498 per 1 kW / h, including $0.0555 per kilowatt / hour in September

In this period, the highest amount of export fell on Italy. Thus, during the reported period Azerbaijan exported commodities to Italy totaling $3.970.75 bln which makes up 22.32 percent of total exports. Mainly oil and oil products are exported to this country. Israel ($1.526.17 bln) and Indonesia ($1.330.69 bln) hold leading positions. Italy has maintained its leading position since 2008 excluding early three months. Turkey took a lead in January and U.S. in February and March 2008.
Turkey ranks first on largest import volume ($1.040.6 billion) in January-September 2012. About 15.38 percent of the Azerbaijani imports fell to it. Russia ranks second - $954.4 million and Germany - third ($549.7 million).
Most of Azerbaijan's imports (27.39 percent) in Jan.-September accounted for the imports of machines, equipment, electric vehicles and their spare parts.
Imports of vehicles and spare parts ranks second in the country's import (15.79 percent).
Import of ferrous metals ranks third (13.03 percent of total import volume).
Furniture delivery has the greatest increase in imports in January-September 2012 (by 29.78 percent) compared to the same period of last year.
Although its share in imports hits only 0.96 percent.
Imports of flour significantly reduced by 98.05 percent.
In late September, the Azerbaijani Cabinet of Ministers signed a resolution to exempt imported wheat, meslin, wheat and wheat-rye flour from the value added tax (VAT) for the period of one year.

According to the State Customs Committee, Azerbaijan's foreign trade turnover with CIS countries in Jan.-Sept. amounted to $2.442.2 billion or 9.94 percent of total volume of Azerbaijan's foreign trade turnover. Exports to CIS countries for the period totaled $7.985.05 billion (4.49 percent of total export) and imports - $1.643.73 billion (24.3 percent of total import).
As a result, the country had a red ink in trading with them to the amount of $845.2 million compared to the surplus worth $351.62 million in 2011.
During this period, about 7,595 legal and physical entities were involved in foreign trade operations, including 3,510 - legal entities and 4,085 - physical entities.
The share of public sector in exports totaled $16.83 billion (94.6 percent), private - $849.7 million (4.78 percent), the share of physical entities - $110.74 million (0.62 percent).
The share of public sector in import operations amounted to $1.38 billion (20.4 percent), the private sector - $5.08 billion (75.15 percent), physical entities -$298.41 million (4.4 percent).
