US President Barack Obama and Turkey's Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan Monday called for the leaders of Libya and Syria to stop attacking civilian protesters, dpa reported.

The two leaders, who discussed the conflicts on the telephone, called for Libyan leader Moamer Qaddafi to step down and "depart Libya permanently in order for there to be a lasting solution that reflects the will of the Libyan people," according to a statement from the White House.

Obama and Erdogan said the Syrian government's use of violence against its own people was "unacceptable."

The government of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad "must end the use of violence now and promptly enact meaningful reforms that respect the democratic aspirations of Syrian citizens," the men agreed.

Obama also "expressed appreciation" for Turkey's humanitarian efforts in Libya and participation in the NATO no-fly zone and arms embargo that aims to protect civilian protesters.
