Al Jazeera journalist Dorothy Parvaz has been released after being detained in Syria 19 days back, the broadcaster said Wednesday.

"During that time she was not allowed any contact with the outside world," said Al Jazeera.

Parvaz arrived at Qatar capital Doha, where Al Jazeera is headquartered, on Wednesday after being first sent to Iran from Syria. She had reportedly entered the Syrian capital, Damascus, on an Iranian passport, DPA reported.

The 39-year-old journalist, who holds US, Canadian and Iranian nationalities, works for Al Jazeera's English-language channel.

"We are grateful to the Iranian officials that she was treated well, and she confirmed that," her fiancé Todd Barker was quoted as saying.

Parvaz was reportedly detained for entering Syria on a tourist visa instead of a work permit for journalists.

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Ramin Mehmanparast said Tuesday that Parvaz had entered Damascus with an expired Iranian passport and without any legal press accreditation, even though, as an Iranian, she did not need a visa for Syria.

Over the past several weeks, the Syrian government has deported scores of journalists and banned others from entering the country after anti-government protests erupted mid-March.
