Three college students taking an early morning dip in the Bay of Bengal went missing and were feared drowned after being swept away by waves in the resort town of Cox Bazaar in southern Bangladesh, local police sources said Sunday, dpa reported.
A group of seven students on holiday went for a swim Saturday and were engulfed by high waves. Lifeguards rescued four bathers in critical condition, said the Bangladesh Observer newspaper.
The search for the untraced three students was continuing as hopes for finding them alive were fading, a local police officer said on condition that he would not be named.
Death by drowning in the bay waters is common in one of the world's longest beaches because of a lack of sufficient number of trained lifeguards.
