The conference on the future of Afghanistan in London later this week will seek contributions of "several hundred million dollars" to a fund aimed at reintegrating Taliban fighters in Afghanistan, Britain's Foreign Office said Tuesday, DPA reported.

A Foreign Office spokeswoman confirmed that an announcement would be made of the "intention to establish an international fund for reintegration" aimed at supporting Afghan-led efforts to develop an effective and sustainable reintegration programme for those fighters who want a route out of violence and back into normal life.

"We expect that several hundred million dollars will be required to sustain the reintegration programme over several years. We are looking to our international partners to help provide the money that will be needed for this important initiative to succeed," said the spokeswoman.

"This is not about paying off the Taliban. This is about splitting the insurgency through the right combination of military pressure and political incentives," she added.
