Sweden and skip Anette Norberg took advantage of two missed takeouts by Canadian Cheryl Bernard to knock off Canada 7-6 in 11 ends on Friday and defend their Olympic gold medal in women's curling, dpa reported.

Bernard could not hold the line with the final stone in the 11th end in failing a double takeout and giving the Swedes the gold medal and Canada the silver.

With Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper and Swedish King Carl XVI Gustaf looking on among the 5,361 fans, the Swedes collected their third medal in four women's curling competitions after gold in 2006 and bronze in 1998.

Canadian curling fans were once again left wanting for more as Canada have not won gold since Nagano 1998. The silver medal is at least one step higher up the podium than bronze in 2002 and 2006.

In the bronze medal match, China beat Switzerland 12-6 for the nation's first curling medal.
