Police confiscated an estimated 1,000 pieces of pre-Colombian artifacts hidden in a rural warehouse, officials said Sunday.
The treasures were discovered in Santa Teresa, about 45 kilometres south of the capital city of Managua, local media reported. The owner of the property had fled, DPA reported.
Most of the pieces are now being registered by the Nicaraguan Institute of Culture (INC).
Clemente Guido, co director of the institute, said many of the objects had suffered damage, causing great loss to the country's cultural heritage.
The treasure stash was discovered while police were working on a case involving illegal trade in valuable wood. The wood was also stored at the warehouse where the artifacts were found.
