The US government is considering allowing visits by families of detainees at the Guantanamo Bay detention facility for suspected terrorists, the Washington Post reported Wednesday.

The International Committee of the Red Cross has been in talks with the Defence Department about setting up a visitation programme, unnamed government sources told the newspaper, dpa reported.

US law does not allow government funds to be used for family visits to Guantanamo, but would not prohibit a programme paid for by the Red Cross.

The Red Cross already arranges for letters, phone calls and video conferencing between detainees and their families.

More than 170 detainees remain at the facility in Cuba.
