At least seven Afghans, including six sportsmen, were killed and 26 others wounded when a passenger bus collided with an oil truck in northern province of Jawzjan early Friday, an official said, Xinhua reported.

"A passenger bus with an estimated 40 people aboard were traveling from Shiberghan to the Afghan capital Kabul but the ill- fated bus collided with an oil tanker at around 2 a.m. local time in Sochi area outside Shiberghan," a provincial health official, Amin Habibi told Xinhua.

He said most of the passengers were provincial sportsmen who were traveling to watch a football match to be held later Friday in Kabul, adding "the collision led to a fire and most of them were victimized by the fire."

The driver of the truck was among the dead, he said.

The injured were admitted to a hospital in the provincial capital, he said.

Reckless driving on congested roads and highways is the main cause of road accidents in Afghanistan.

A total of 51 people were killed as a passenger bus and oil tanker collided in eastern Ghazni province in September.
