Azerbaijan, Baku, Sept. 18 / Trend T. Jafarov /
Iran is fighting against drug trafficking and transit methodically and drugs are not trafficked through the Iranian border to the occupied territories of Azerbaijan, commander of the Iranian Border Police Hussein Zulfugari told Trend on Tuesday during his visit to Baku.
"We have no relations with those responsible engaged in border security in the occupied Nagorno-Karabakh," he said. "The border protection is carried out unilaterally. Maybe drugs appear in these territories in small quantities. But I can say that no drugs were trafficked through our border to the occupied territories."
According to him, Iran is fighting against drug trafficking and transit systematically.
"We mainly prevent the export of drugs to Azerbaijan and Turkey," he said. "More than 38 tons of drugs are found in Iran every month. We are working hard in the fight against drug smuggling on the border with Pakistan and Afghanistan. We have lost more than 4000 people, 12,000 wounded in fights against drug trafficking. We seized 12 tons of drugs on the border with Afghanistan from one criminal group. One can imagine the tragedy of the regional countries if we do not stop the flow of drugs."
The Iranian commander said that some Iranian and Azerbaijani citizens are smuggling drugs at the border. However fewer drugs are being trafficked due to the efforts of border guards of both countries.
"This is very small compared to the volumes that we face," he stressed. "Azerbaijani and Iranian border guards are protecting the border very well. Those citizens trying to smuggle drugs through the border are detained by Iranian and Azerbaijani border guards."
