BAKU, Azerbaijan, December 21. The European Union’s gas consumption in the third quarter of 2024 reached 56 bcm, maintaining almost the same level quarter-to-quarter, Trend reports.

The data obtained from the European Commission indicated that this stability suggests a potential halt in the year-on-year decline in gas consumption that has been observed since 2021.

Compared to 2Q2024, there was a 9-percent decrease in consumption, equivalent to 5.6 bcm, from 59 bcm. This seasonal drop aligns with typical patterns during the summer months when the demand for heating diminishes.

The EU’s gas consumption from 2019 to 2024 reveals a significant evolution, reflecting changes in energy demand and consumption patterns. In 2019, 3Q gas consumption was 72 bcm. This figure remained unchanged compared to 3Q2020. However, the trend shifted dramatically as gas consumption began to decline sharply.

By Q3 2021, consumption fell to 64 bcm, and this downward trajectory continued through 2022 and 2023, where the Q3 consumption reached 59 bcm and 56 bcm, respectively. The 2024 figure of 56 bcm indicates that the rate of decline may have halted, showing a stabilization.

Despite the stabilization in 2024, the overall picture from 2019 to 2024 highlights a 29-percent reduction in 3Q gas consumption over five years.
