BAKU, Azerbaijan, December 24. In the third quarter of 2024, domestic gas production was led by The Netherlands, which reclaimed its position as the EU’s top producer.

According to the data obtained by Trend from the European Commission, the country is followed by Romania and Germany. Together, these three countries accounted for more than half of the EU’s total domestic gas production.

Top producers and trends

1. The Netherlands:

• Production: 2.34 bcm

2. Romania:

• Production: 2.27 bcm

3. Germany:

• Production: 947 mcm

Production increases were recorded in 8 member states, with the largest growth observed in:

• Denmark: +36%

• Croatia: +31%

• Czechia: +24%

• Ireland: +24%

• Hungary: +15%

Meanwhile, significant year-on-year declines were observed in:

• France: -88%

• Spain: -87%

• Slovakia: -50%

Compared to 2Q2024, production increased modestly in several countries, including:

• Netherlands: +6%

• Germany: +5%

• Romania: +3%

• Austria: +3%

However, some countries experienced declines, such as:

• France: -82%

• Spain: -81%

The EU’s reliance on domestic gas production remains low compared to imports, but efforts by member states like the Netherlands and Romania highlight the importance of domestic resources in ensuring energy security.
