ASTANA, Kazakhstan, January 7. As many as 8,730 freight trains passed through the Kazakhstan-China border crossing in Khorgos from January through December 2024, which is 12.5 percent more than the previous year, Trend reports.
On average, 22 trains were processed there daily, and the processing time was reduced from 12 hours to six to eight hours. The total volume of cargo transportation exceeded 12 million tons, increasing by nearly 11 percent over the year. Since the launch of the China-Europe freight service in 2016, over 40,000 trains have passed through Khorgos on 85 routes to 18 countries. Along with the checkpoint "Alashankou," also located on the border with Kazakhstan, the border crossing handles 40 percent of all railway cargo traffic from China to Europe.
To note, the International Center for Cross-Border Cooperation "Khorgos" is a complex of trade, economic, investment cooperation, and tourism development, consisting of both the Kazakh and Chinese parts, located in the border areas of the two countries. The project is being implemented within the framework of the new economic policy "NURLY ZHOL" and the "One Belt, One Road" strategy at the border with China.
