BAKU, Azerbaijan, April 15. Automobile transport, the big cheese in Azerbaijan's transport sector, hauled a whopping 32.5 million tons of freight and catered to 416.3 million passengers in the first quarter of 2025.
Data obtained by Trend from the State Statistics Committee indicates that compared to the same period last year, freight and passenger transportation by automobile increased by 6.8 percent and 4.9 percent, respectively.
Out of the passengers hitting the road by car, a whopping 95.6 percent hopped on buses, while a mere 4.4 percent took a ride in passenger taxis. On that account, freight turnover rose by 8.1 percent, and passenger turnover increased by 7.6 percent during the reporting period.
To note, cargo and passenger transportation in Azerbaijan from January through March 2025 increased by 2.3 percent and 4.2 percent, respectively, compared to the same period of the previous year. Economic entities operating in the transport sector transported 55.9 million tons of cargo. Of this, 4 percent was transported by sea, 7.7 percent by railway, 0.2 percent by air, 58.1 percent by road, and 30.0 percent by pipeline.
The amount of cargo moved by vehicles in the non-state sector saw a bump of 3.8 percent, with this sector holding the lion's share at 77.4 percent of all cargo transported. In January–March 2025, transport companies served 472.1 million passengers. Of these, 88.2 percent used road transport, 11.2 percent used the metro, and the rest were transported by other means of transport.
