ASTANA, Kazakhstan, June 3. A new phase in Central Asia–China logistics cooperation began this month with the launch of the first container train from Xi’an, China, to the Zhetysu container terminal in Almaty, Kazakhstan, Trend reports.
The new terminal, currently undergoing final preparations, is scheduled to begin full operations on June 10.
Zhetysu will become the largest container hub in Almaty, specializing in the consolidation and distribution of Chinese imports. The terminal is designed to handle both rail and road cargo and will provide a full range of logistics services, including storage, customs clearance, and first- and last-mile delivery.
The terminal is strategically located at the crossroads of major international transit corridors, including the Trans-Caspian International Transport Route, also known as the Middle Corridor. This route connects China with Europe via Kazakhstan, the Caspian Sea, the South Caucasus, and Turkey, offering a viable alternative to northern and maritime routes.
The Zhetysu project is part of broader efforts to modernize Kazakhstan’s logistics infrastructure and reduce transport costs. Its integration with the Xi’an hub in China is expected to enhance the region’s role in global supply chains and improve the efficiency of cargo movement between East and West.
By strengthening logistical ties between Kazakhstan and China, the project supports deeper regional connectivity and contributes to the long-term development of the Middle Corridor.
