BAKU, Azerbaijan, July 21. The Islamic Republic of Iran Railways (RAI) has signed memoranda of understanding with two domestic companies to purchase and repair railway passenger cars, Trend reports via the Iranian Ministry of Roads and Urban Development.
The signing ceremony took place in Tehran on July 20 and was attended by Minister Farzaneh Sadegh and other officials.
According to the agreements, the RAI will acquire 130 new passenger cars and refurbish 140 existing ones. The total investment for these projects will amount to approximately 88.2 trillion rials (about $153 million).
Under the agreement with Raja Railway Transport Co. (Raja), 100 cars will be repaired and 60 new ones purchased, with an allocation of 50 trillion rials (about $86.6 million).
A second agreement with Rail Tarabar Saba Co. (Saba) includes the purchase of 70 new passenger cars and the repair of 37 others, with funding amounting to 38.2 trillion rials (about $66.2 million).
Iran's railway network stretches over 14,984 kilometers and currently operates with 993 locomotives, 29,950 freight wagons, and 2,178 passenger cars.
