An average of 800 kilometers of highways have been put into operation in Iran per year since 2018 (on October 20, 2018, the current minister took office), Minister of Roads and Urban Development Mohammad Eslami said, Trend reports citing the ministry.
Eslami said that this is an appropriate figure considering the state budget in Iran.
The minister added that about 5,600 kilometers of highways have been put into operation in Iran since the current government came to power in Iran (August 2013).
"More than 900 kilometers of highways will be commissioned by the end of the government's term [August 2021]," he said.
Eslami noted that the number of controlled-access highways to be commissioned in Iran will increase by 30 percent by the end of the current government.
"Thus, the length of Iran's controlled-access highways will be increased from 2,100 to 3,100 kilometers," he said.
The minister added that so far, more than 317 kilometers of controlled-access highways have been commissioned, and over 600 kilometers will be commissioned by the end of the government's term.
"The ministry is seeking to increase the length of controlled-access highways. Under the five-year program, the length of Iran's controlled-access highways will increase by minimum 6,000 kilometers," he said.
