The cargo turnover through the Kazakh-Chinese railway crossings sharply increased in the first weeks of 2013, Kazakhstan Temir Zholy (Kazakh Railway) reported on Monday.
According to the Kazakh Railway, the cargo turnover through Dostyk station increased by 31.3 percent to 1.185 million tons on January 21-24. Some 791,758 tons of this cargo fell on Kazakh export to China and 393,548 tons fell on Kazakh import from China.
The cargo turnover through Dostyk station in the same period of 2011 hit 902,577 tons.
Meanwhile cargo turnover through railway crossing Altynkol-Khorgos which was launched in December 2012 hit 17,164 tons in the reporting period.
Kazakhstan to China are connected by two railway lines. The first railway crossing Dostyk-Alashankou was launched in 1991. Over 156 million tons of cargo has been transported by this railway line since it launching. However, the capacity of this railway line is limited.
The cargo transportation through Altynkol-Khorgos railway crossing is expected to hit 10 million tons in 2015 and 15 million tons in 2020.
