Iran plans to increase the production of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) in a bid to decrease the dependency of the nation's cars to gasoline, the Mehr News Agency reported.
Currently, just 16 LPG stations are in operation across the country, but the Iranian government has decided to raise the number of LPG stations as gasoline consumption has recently increased.
For the time being, LPG has a 5 percent share in the fuel basket of cars in Iran.
Meanwhile, Iran plans to establish 314 new compressed natural gas (CNG) stations across the country in order to boost the CNG share in the country's fuel basket by 2 percent to reach 25 percent, IRNA quoted National Iranian Oil Products Distribution Company official Shahram Asadpour as saying.
The number of compressed natural gas filling stations in the country stands at 1976, he added.
The Natural Gas Vehicle Global says Iran is now the world's leader in terms of numbers of natural gas vehicles, ahead of Pakistan, Argentina, Brazil and India, ISNA reported.
Iran's Oil Minister Rostam Qasemi said on September 21, 2012, that Iran will boost its gasoline production capacity by 10 million liters in the near future.
According to his statements, once the third development phase of the Abadan Oil Refinery, the Lavan Refinery's gasoline production unit, and the RFCC unit of the Shazand Refinery come on stream, the country's clean gasoline output (Euro-4 and Euro-5 standards) will reach 25 million liters, from the current figure of 12 million.
Iran produces 64 million liters gasoline per day which meets only domestic needs.
