Uzbekistan will direct about $10 billion for projects on development of roads and railways, logistics centers and communications over the next five years , the Uzbek media Program of Action of the Cabinet of Ministers of Uzbekistan said Jan.27.
In total, the implementation of over 150 projects is provided within the program of development and modernization of production infrastructure in Uzbekistan for 2015-2019.
The implementation of 13 investment projects for the development and electrification of railway communications, including Angren-Pap, Marokand-Karshi, Karshi-Termez, Marokand-Bukhara directions will be under special control of the government.
In addition, it is necessary to ensure the construction and renovation of 1,800 kilometers of the Uzbek national highway, the new bypass roads in Karshi, Kokand, Tashkent, Bukhara, Gulistan cities, and consistently upgrade local roads.
Remoteness of transport communications and the lack of direct access to sea ports is a major problem for Uzbekistan, the foreign trade turnover of which is implemented by the transit through the territories of two or three states, which leads to an increase in costs for the delivery of goods, as well as negatively affects the export competitiveness of enterprises of the republic, the program said.
Currently, the total length of roads in Uzbekistan is 146, 400 kilometers. Some 42, 500 kilometers of them are main public roads, including 3, 200 kilometers - international highway and 18, 800 kilometers - highway of national importance. Some 20 international transport routes and directions pass through the territory of Uzbekistan.
Program of construction of national highway of the first category worth $3.44 billion was approved by the president of Uzbekistan in May 2009.
The project is financed by the government of Uzbekistan in the amount of $1.86 billion, as well as loans of the Asian Development Bank (ADB), Islamic Development Bank (IDB) and other international financial institutions totaling $1.58 billion.
The total length of railways of Uzbekistan is more than 4,200 kilometers, about 1,000 kilometers of which were electrified.
In total, it is planned to electrify about 2,000 kilometers of railways in the country.
