The Azerenergy JSC, the main producer of electricity in Azerbaijan, plans to commission the second combined-cycle unit at Shimal power plant in the second half of 2016, a source on the country's energy market told Trend.
Almost 90 percent of the construction work has already been completed, according to the source.
"The work continues in accordance with the plan," said the source.
The capacity of the second combined-cycle unit at Shimal power plant will be 409 megawatts. Currently, the power plant meets a quarter of demand for electricity in Baku and Absheron. This figure will reach 35-40 percent after completing the construction of the second unit.
The construction work is carried out based on the agreement signed with the Japanese Toyo Engineering company.
Currently, there is one combined-cycle unit with the capacity of 400 megawatts at Shimal power plant.
The generation capacity of Azerbaijan's power system is 7,129 megawatts which makes it possible to produce around 24 billion kilowatt hours of electricity and to export 2.1 billion kilowatt hours per year.
