Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO) is implementing a project in Uzbekistan to develop business cooperation between Japanese and Uzbek companies in the consumer goods segment for the middle-income population, Manabu Shimoyashiro, Director General of the Tashkent Office of the Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO), told Trend Oct. 12.
According to him, within the framework of the Development of Volume Zone Business project, the organization conducts research in various sectors of the economy and social life of Uzbekistan and publishes it on the JETRO’s main website, where Japanese companies can get information about the industry of interest.
“The authorized coordinator of the project in Uzbekistan provides full support for the business development of Japanese companies in Uzbekistan, starting from preliminary market research, drawing up a list of potential partners, organizing meetings and visits of Japanese companies with accompaniment during the meetings, if necessary, followed by maintaining communication between the potential partners,” Shimoyashiro noted.
He added that numerous visits of Japanese companies to Uzbekistan were organized and a cooperation exchange was held with participation of Uzbek businessmen interested in cooperation with Japanese companies.
Shimoyashiro noted that the program of inviting Uzbek companies interested in importing Japanese goods to Uzbekistan was launched as part of JETRO's activities.
He reminded that JETRO regularly promotes participation of Uzbek producers on preferential terms in FOODEX Japan, the largest food fair in Japan and Asian countries, thereby helping local producers to enter the Japanese food market and expand the export geography of Uzbek goods.
In January-August 2018, trade turnover between Uzbekistan and Japan amounted to $219 million (a 2.1 times increase), of which $8.9 million accounted for exports from Uzbekistan, and $210.1 million for imports from Japan.
Main goods imported from Japan are cars and car parts, various equipment, electrical machinery and other electrical equipment.
Japanese investments in the economy of Uzbekistan exceed $2.5 billion. Japan invests in projects in railway transport, oil and gas, energy, mining, automotive, telecommunications, electronics, textile industry.
Representative offices of large Japanese corporations, such as Mitsubishi, Marubeni, ITOCHU are operating in Uzbekistan.
