Private sector of Turkey is going to start importing electric power from Iran till the end of this year, the Zaman newspaper reported on Monday with reference to a source in the Energy Market Regulatory Authority of Turkey (EPDK).

A tender is planned to be held for importing electricity from Iran to Turkey. Two companies whose names are not disclosed have already applied for participation in the tender.

It is reported that Turkey intends to increase electric power imports from Iran up to 400 megawatts. The exact price is not known, but according to the newspaper, it will be lower than for power from other sources.

Earlier EPDK reported that in February Turkey imported 625.6 million kWh of electricity, which is 3 percent less than the same month last year.

The electric power consumption in February 2013 decreased by 1.2 percent compared to February 2012, amounting to 18.8 billion kWh.
