Uzbekenergo State JSC has completed the first stage of the project for modernization of Novo-Angren thermal power plant (TPP) in Tashkent province at a total cost of $213.7 million, the company representative told Trend on Jan.21.
A new coal supply and burning system was created under the project and as a result of its functioning, five power units of the TPP have been transferred to year-round coal burning, according to the company representative.
Uzbek Tashenergoproekt JSC is the general contractor of this project.
In addition, in order to uninterruptedly provide the plant with coal, Angren coal mine was modernized under the project, as a result of which, coal production doubled to 6.4 million tons. The general contractor for modernization of the mine is Chinese Sino Coal International Engineering.
"In total, around 4.36 million tons of coal per year will be delivered to Novo-Angren TPP from the Angren mine. This will ensure generation of around 7.02 billion kilowatt\hours electricity per year and the release of about 713.5 million cubic meters of natural gas," Uzbekenergo representative said.
The project was financed with a loan from the Uzbekistan's Reconstruction and Development Fund in the amount of $51.28 million, aloan from Chinese Eximbank in the amount of $113.8 million and with equity of Uzbekenergo State JSC.
It was earlier reported that at the subsequent stages of modernization of Novo-Angren TPP, it is planned to carry out modernization of the sixth and the seventh power units by transferring them to coal burning, and also "turnkey" construction of the new, eighth 300 megawatt power unit.
Angren brown coal field is the largest one in Uzbekistan. Angren and Apartak mines operate there and the production in those mine is carried out openly. Some 90 percent of coal produced in the country comes from the Angren mine.
Currently, some 45 power plants with a total capacity of over 12,400 megawatt, including around 16 power plants of Uzbekenergo State JSC with capacity of 12,040 megawatt operate in Uzbekistan's power supply system.
